Fork-tailed Flycatcher

The Latin America Committee (LAC) has collaborated with Panama Audubon Society (PAS) and Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) in the production of a small bird book titled Qué Vuela Ahí? Guía para conocer, apreciar y proteger las aves de la ciudad de Panamá and a companion in English titled A Guide to the Common Birds of Panama City.

Yellow-crowned Euphonia

Jorge Ventocilla, environmental education specialist at STRI, is author of the book and Dana Gardner of the LAC is illustrator. The pictures on this page were painted especially for this project.

These books, featuring 50 species of birds commonly found in the urban areas of central Panama, aim at familiarizing urban Panamanians with the common birds in their surroundings and providing tourists with a means of identifying those birds they are most likely to see.

The project budget was $40,000 of which the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Foundation contributed $10,000 on a 3:1 matching basis. Through the generosity of an anonymous donor and of the Hesperornis Fund of the San Francisco Foundation, the Golden Gate Audubon made an initial contribution of $6,000. Time and expenses of Dana Gardner added another $6,200 to the matching funds account. Additional funds were provided to Panama Audubon from contributions of participants in our field trips (see companion page).

Dana has also recently completed a guide to the common birds of the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve in Mexico (see companion page); future projects include a similar guide for the birds of Sierra de Bahoruco National Park in the Dominican Republic (see companion page).
